Marxism message, Communism and Surrealism

Marxism message, Communism and Surrealism (This weekend I plan to post a lengthy critique of Surrealism, Trotsky and Freud that was inspired by a show on Surrealist Art that closed about a week ago at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This is from Franklin Rosemont's introduction to a collection of Andre Breton's writings titled "What is Surrealism", which was published by Monad Press in 1978. Monad was a publishing project of the American SWP back when they were publishing other material besides Jack Barnes's speeches. I don't know too much about Rosemont, except that he was connected in some fashion to CLR James in the Chicago area. I can tell you this much at this point. I don't agree with what Rosemont is saying below at all. More about that later.) One could say that surrealism achieves for Hegel's Aesthetics what Marx and Engels achieved for his Logic, or that it is to leisure what communism is to labour. Appealing to inspiration, imagination, dreams and other forces and states which continue to be regarded as irrational - that is, penetrating the positivist veneer of consciousness, undermining the suffocating utilitarian fetishes of mental routine, suppressing the superego and plunging through the ego into the id, ceaselessly clearing paths and building bridges between the different psychic states - surrealism demonstrates the inescapable necessity of poetry by restoring its value as the bearer of analogical discovery and imaginative revelation. Surrealism thus appropriates the prerogatives ascribed by Hegel to poetry as the universal art that embraces the totality of the human spirit and unites all 'artistic' activity.
