- Born in Paris, France on January 5, 1900, Raymond Georges Yves Tanguy was the son of a retired Navy captain. At the age of eight, his father died, forcing his mother to return to her home in Locronan, Finistère, where Tanguy was raised by various relatives.
Surrealism, Freud and Trotsky Although I attended the Metropolitan Museum Surrealism show without any preconceptions, I found myself troubled by the artwork in a way that I had not anticipated. While I had previously seen many of the individual paintings, massed together they conveyed a very troubling image of women often erupting into open misogyny.

Surrealist Revolution André Breton (1896-1966): French poet, essayist, critic, and editor, chief promoter and one of the founders of Surrealist movement with Paul Eluard, Josef Agnon, Luis Bunuel, Salvador Dali, and Jean Cocteau among others. Breton joined first in 1916 the Dadaist group, but turned then to Surrealism and cofounded with Louis Aragon and Philippe Soupault the review Littérature.

Perhaps best known for its arresting visual art 'Surrealism' usually describes what was a powerful intellectual movement in the inter-war years which had its orgins in, and itself developed, a powerful and critical literary movement. Although the artistic and political import of what comes under the heading of surrealism varies considerably, a shared practice is the forming of juxtapositions between unrelated objects that could be described as a kind of attempt to write the unconscious.

Surrealism is a period in art history when artists create dreamlike paintings filled with mysterious objects or familiar objects that have been oddly changed in ways that you would not see in reality. Surrealism is a style of art where objects are realistically painted (they look real with light shadows, and details) but the way they are arranged or the way their shape is altered makes them look dreamlike, and therefore, beyond real.
A literary and art movement, dedicated to expressing the imagination as revealed in dreams, free of the conscious control of reason and convention. Surrealism inherited its anti-rationalist sensibility from Dada, but was lighter in spirit than that movement.
The organic Surrealists included Jean Arp, Max Ernst, Andre Masson, Yves Tanguy and Joan Miro. These Surrealist painters worked with amorphous, organic forms which were imaginatively suggestive-even emotionally expressive-but non-representational.

(This weekend I plan to post a lengthy critique of Surrealism, Trotsky and Freud that was inspired by a show on Surrealist Art that closed about a week ago at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This is from Franklin Rosemont's introduction to a collection of Andre Breton's writings titled "What is Surrealism", which was published by Monad Press in 1978. Monad was a publishing project of the American SWP back when they were publishing other material besides Jack Barnes's speeches. I don't know too much about Rosemont, except that he was connected in some fashion to CLR James in the Chicago area. I can tell you this much at this point. I don't agree with what Rosemont is saying below at all. More about that later.) One could say that surrealism achieves for Hegel's Aesthetics what Marx and Engels achieved for his Logic, or that it is to leisure what communism is to labour. Appealing to inspiration, imagination, dreams and other forces and states which continue to be regarded as irrational - that is, penetrating the positivist veneer of consciousness, undermining the suffocating utilitarian fetishes of mental routine, suppressing the superego and plunging through the ego into the id, ceaselessly clearing paths and building bridges between the different psychic states - surrealism demonstrates the inescapable necessity of poetry by restoring its value as the bearer of analogical discovery and imaginative revelation. Surrealism thus appropriates the prerogatives ascribed by Hegel to poetry as the universal art that embraces the totality of the human spirit and unites all 'artistic' activity.
