Neorealism is obviously of the artistic variety, because no success-oriented political force would stake its fortunes on the root word "real.

Italian Neo-Realism A film movement that developed due to the devastating effects of WWII, Italian Neo-Realism began in 1943 until its generally accepted finale in 1952. Desperate to create despite extreme hardships, Italian filmmakers crafted films outdoors on location, using non-actors and whatever film stock they could find.
It’s interesting to shortly run over again the story of the word Neorealism, because it lets us seize two fundemental aspects of this movement’s nature: the strict link it had with cinema, from which it originates the title, and the edge of the actual work and the problematicity that has accompained this cultural movement till today. Infact, even if the term Neorealism started to be used at the end of the Twenties with reference to the artistic tendencies of that period and the German word “Neue Sachlichkeit” (New objectivity), who used it in a new way was the film editor of the film “ Ossessione ” by Visconti, and this caused its quick diffusion in the film sphere.
But 20 years or so after Neorealism we can discern the emergence of a group of filmakers who react against this type of production. These directors were associated with what came to be known as the ‘New Italian Cinema'.
The beginnings of Italian Neorealism can be found with the director Roberto Rossellini and his movie, Rome, Open City. It is a movie about the collaboration of the Catholics and Communists fighting the Nazi occupation of Rome shortly before the American army liberated the city.

Theory Neorealism shuns classical realism's use of often essentialist concepts such as "human nature" to explain international politics. Instead, neorealist thinkers developed a theory that privileges structural constraints over agents' strategies and motivations.

Through the story of the term Neorealism we are just arrived to the problem of the chronological definition of this movement. In general we agree that the explosion of Neorealism belongs to the period from 1943 to 1949, but, even if in different ways, the final period of the Thirties is considered a fundamental precursor of this cultural phenomenon: there’s just who talks about a “new realism” (Luperini) and who sees in it the period of the sowing: the preparing period of the sowing began about in 1930 with the consolidation of the intellectuals’ first reactions to the stabilized Fascist dictatorship in and outside Italy.

Abstract: This essay sets out the main elements of the revisionary and philosophical interpretation of the jurisprudence of American Legal Realism that I have developed in a series of articles over the last decade. The revisionary reading also debunks certain popular myths about Legal Realism, like the following: the Realists believed "what the judge ate for breakfast determines the decision"; a critique of the public/private distinction was a central part of Realist jurisprudence; and the Realists were committed to an incoherent form of rule-skepticism.
Artists by Movement: Realism Mid-19th Century Realism is an approach to art in which subjects are depicted in as straightforward a manner as possible, without idealizing them and without following rules of formal artistic theory. The earliest Realist work began to appear in the 18th century, in a reaction to the excesses of Romanticism and Neoclassicism. This is evident in John Singleton Copley's paintings, and some of the works of Goya. But the great Realist era was the middle of the 19th century, as artists became disillusioned with the artifice of the Salons and the influence of the Academies. Realism came closest to being an organized movement in France, inspiring artists such as Camille Corot, Jean-Francois Millet and the Barbizon School of landscape painters. Besides Copley, American Realists included the painters Thomas Eakins, and Henry Ossawa Tanner, both of whom studied in France. French Realism was a guiding influence on the philosophy of the Impressionists. The Ashcan School artists, the American Scene painters, and, much later, on the Contemporary Realists are all following the American Realist tradition.

The central feature of the new realism was a rejection of the epistemological dualism of John Locke and the older forms of realism. The group, including Ralph Barton Perry, Edwin Holt, and William Montague, maintained that when one is conscious of, or knows, an object, it is an error to say that there are two distinct facts - knowledge of the object in a mind, and an extra-mental object in itself. In an example from Edwin Holt: the question between the old realism and the new concerns knowledge that a particular cow is black. Is the blackness on that cow's hide, or in the observer's mind? " That color out there is the thing in consciousness selected for such inclusion by the nervous system's specific response,"Holt wrote. My consciousness, in the sense Holt has in mind here, is not physically identical with the nervous system which is the condition of selections. The consciousness is "out there" with the hide of the cow.
