Greek islands - Greece
Hello! My name is Panagiotis and I'll be your guide to the Greek Islands. If you decide to follow me I will help you discover the beauty of the Greek islands and maybe make you fall in love with them and decide to explore them further! Before you make up your mind let me tell you a few things about myself so that you can get to know me better. I am 37 years old and I got married two years ago in Santorini, the Greek Cycladic island. I was born and raised in Athens, my father is from Lesvos and my mother from Heraklio. After I entered the university in Rethymno Crete, the largest island of Greece, I moved there for four years to complete my studies and then I returned back to Athens. Both my parents are extremely proud to be Greeks, which resulted in my traveling since I was an infant to them. I have visited all of the islands at least once, some of them maybe twice and Crete more than 10 times. Every year I visit one or sometimes even two Greek islands in the summer.

Greek History & the Gods
Greek History and the Gods ( LINKS ) We know little about the religion of the Greeks before Homer because written records are so sparse. The archeological record reveals a fascinating, if tantalizingly incomplete, picture of a very different society from that depicted in the Iliad and the Odyssey. To begin with, the first inhabitants of the Greek peninsula did not speak Greek. What language they spoke is unknown, but by the new stone age (6000-2800 BC) there were scattered small settlements of goddess-worshipping farmers on the Greek mainland and the islands. From a variety of archeological evidence, chiefly clay figurines of women with accentuated female characteristics, we know that such goddess-worship was widespread throughout Europe in the new stone age (see Gimbutas). Sometime around 2200-1900 BC, the Greek mainland was invaded by nomadic warriors who brought the horse with them, spoke an early form of Greek, and probably worshipped a sky-god like Zeus. At any rate, as Finley Hooper notes, "Wherever the new people settled, phallic figures rivaled the established fertility goddesses" (39-40). Myths of Zeus' many marriages, liaisons, and rapes of various goddesses probably reflect this early forced marriage between a masculine religion of the sky god and a feminine religion of the earth. Burnt bricks in the old settlements testify to the violent nature of the invasions. On the islands, and especially on the island of Crete, the civilization of the goddess lasted a bit longer.
