Diane Rosenblum Althoff is an artist in residence at the Kala Art Institute in Berkeley, a printmaking studio. Her non-camera photography was included in the Agitate exhibition at San Francisco Camerawork, as well as in recent shows at Mills College and the University of California at Davis. To read more about Diane Althoff's unique techniques click the following link: Artist Statement Non-camera photography began with William Henry Fox Talbot in Victorian England. One of the inventors of photography, Talbot put leaves, flowers and lace directly on photographic paper and exposed it to light, making the first photogram. His contemporary, Anna Atkins, made beautiful photogram catalogues of plant forms, compendiums that were part art, part botanical records. Half a century later, American artist Man Ray, living in Paris, made a series of Rayograms, mysterious photograms of manufactured items arranged into complex compositions. Like my prints, Man Ray's are made with a negative or reversal process. White areas on the print occur where light is blocked, while dark areas are created with more light hitting the paper. In the last ten years a number of artists, such as those in the Agitate exhibition at Camerawork in 2003, are exploring various non-camera photographic processes. My non-camera work is a continuation of this small but vital area in photographic history.

FREE Newsletter. Sign Up Now! Abstract Art - an introduction to abstract art, what it is, how it developed. "Of all the arts, abstract painting is the most difficult. It demands that you know how to draw well, that you have a heightened sensitivity for composition and for colours, and that you be a true poet. This last is essential. " - Wassily Kandinsky. In its purest form in Western art, an abstract art is one without a recognisable subject, one which doesn't relate to anything external or try to "look like" something. Instead the colour and form (and often the materials and support ) are the subject of the abstract painting. It's completely non-objective or non-representational. A further distinction tends to be made between abstract art which is geometric, such as the work of Mondrian, and abstract art that is more fluid (and where the apparent spontaneity often belies careful planning and execution), such as the abstract art of Kandinsky or Pollock.

more The Human Abstract Biography When a band takes its name from one of the metaphysical British poet William Blake's most allegorical and impenetrable poems, they clearly aren't taking the easy route to fame and fortune. In keeping with their titular inspiration, the Human Abstract favors a brainy, progressive take on contemporary metal and hardcore that looks beyond the usual cars and girls themes.
Abstract: Human rights and intellectual property, two bodies of law that were once strangers, are becoming increasingly intimate bedfellows. Over the past three years, human rights bodies within the United Nations have devoted unprecedented attention to intellectual property issues, including patented medicines, digital copyrights, technology transfers, economic, social and cultural rights, plant variety protection, and economic development. Unlike the approaches adopted in established intellectual property lawmaking organizations such as the WTO and WIPO, the new human rights approach to intellectual property is often critical of existing standards of protection and it seeks to address legal and policy issues that intellectual property treaty makers and legislators often ignore. In this essay, I analyze two competing frameworks that governments, NGOs, and intergovernmental organizations are using to conceptualize the intersection of human rights and intellectual property. The first approach views the two areas of law as in fundamental conflict, with strong intellectual property protection standards - in particular those of the TRIPs Agreement - undermining a broad spectrum of human rights. The second approach sees both areas of law as concerned with the same basic question: defining the appropriate scope of private monopoly power to give authors and inventors a sufficient incentive to create and innovate, while ensuring that the consuming public adequate access to the fruits of their efforts. The essay traces the evolution of these two competing approaches and explores their consequences for future international lawmaking.

Abstract: Human security is fundamentally concerned with helping people to deal with unforeseeable threats and sudden downturns, whether international financial crises, environmental disasters or incapacitating illnesses. In this paper I argue that NGOs, as one of the most visible sets of actors in the related fields of human development and human rights, can play a significant role in helping to achieve human security.
